College Bowl Season Game Results and Discussion

The two NCAA football bowl season games are complete.  With 35 bowl games, there was a wide variance in performance statistics, with only one tie that had to use a tiebreaker, which was the lowest opponent yardage race for the team game.  Virginia Tech and Rutgers each only allowed 196 yards, but Virginia Tech got the nod as it took Rutgers 79 plays to gain that yardage while Virginia Tech took 72.

What we discovered is that for at least this bowl season, the Other/Field entries did extremely well, taking many of the finish positions.  For next year, we’ll strongly consider expanding the field sizes to around 16 (15 named plus the field entry) for the team game, in order to give players more options.  For the conference game, we might expand to ten or twelve to achieve the same result.

Here are the results of the team bowl season game and the conference bowl season game:

Team Game

Category / Race (1st, 2nd, 3rd – w/odds)

Rushing Yardage (Favorite – Other/Field 2:1)

  1. Other/Field 2:1
  2. Other/Field 2:1
  3. Other/Field 2:1

Passing Yardage (Favorite – Other/Field 2:1)

  1. Georgia 21:1
  2. Other/Field 2:1
  3. Other/Field 2:1

Opponent Yards (Favorite – Other/Field 2:1)

  1. Other/Field 2:1
  2. Other/Field 2:1
  3. Other/Field 2:1

Kicking Points (Favorite – Other/Field 2:1)

  1. Other/Field 2:1
  2. Other/Field 2:1
  3. Other/Field 2:1

Conference Game

Rushing Yards (Favorite – SEC 3:1)

  1. Other/Field 5:1
  2. Pac 12 6:1
  3. Other/Field 5:1

Passing Yards (Favorite – SEC and Pac 12 at 4:1)

  1. SEC 4:1
  2. Other/Field 6:1
  3. ACC 8:1

Opponent Yards (Favorite – SEC 4:1)

  1. ACC 6:1
  2. Other/Field 5:1
  3. ACC 6:1

The conference game seemed to work fine with just the three races (passing yardage, rushing yardage, defensive yards allowed).  Again we’ll likely expand the field size to cover more of the conferences discretely.  For this game, we named the typical BCS conferences and lumped the others into the other/field category.
